Mr. John W. Kovacs

UTICA – Mr. John W. Kovacs, age 49, passed away unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 merely four days after his mother Barbara’s passing on December 23, 2022. It was as if the pair didn’t wish to be apart for long, as John was a devoted son and cared for his mother’s every need. Born in New Hartford on April 21, 1973, John was the son of the late Carl, III and Barbara (Pooley) Kovacs. He attended Sacred Heart Grammar School, Kernan Middle School, and in 1991 graduated from Utica Senior Academy. At one time he found employment as a security guard for Hannaford Supermarkets, servicing the Utica area stores. John will be remembered for his great story-telling skills – especially always embellishing them! He had the gift of being able to hold an audience’s attention with his tales and had excellent delivery. He had a passion for automobiles. He was so knowledgeable about them, particularly Mustangs, and could explain the details of each model with enthusiasm. He also was a great lover of felines and treated them as his “kids.” But most importantly, he was a wonderful son. When he took care of his mother later in her life, he always ensured all her daily needs were met. He served as a devoted caretaker and was of great comfort. John now joins his mother and father and his infant brother, Carl Kovacs, IV, who passed in 1971. He was also preceded by his maternal grandparents, John L. and Ida “Edith” (Baia) Pooley; and paternal grandparents, Carl II, and Gladys (Rakowski) Kovacs. John will be remembered by his aunts, Susan Kovacs and her late husband Gary, and Barabra Kovacs and her late husband William; many cousins; and his co-worker and longtime friend, Glenn Powers. The family wishes to extend a sincere thanks to the Utica Police and Fire Departments who responded to the Kovacs’ needs with so much respect and reverence. In keeping with John’s wishes, the family will commemorate his life at their convenience.
