Mr. John J. Greco

Mr. John J. Greco, age 86, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at the Heritage Health Care Center. Born in Utica on December 7, 1929, John was the son of the late John and Mabel Greco. He was raised and educated locally. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, John honorably served his country from 1947-1951. On January 14, 1955 he married the former Marie Peppenelli with whom he shared 59 years in a loving, traditional union. At one time, John held a position with the NY Central Railroad. Most recently, he worked as a meat cutter for various butchers, including Dino’s Sausage Company. A devoted family man, John enjoyed winter with his grandkids and had fond memories of proudly constructing igloos for them to play in. He was also charitable of heart and gave generously to various charities. John is survived by his daughter, Charlene O’Neil of Utica; and his son, John C. Greco and Karen Knapp of Tennessee. Always close to his heart was the memory of his son, James Greco, Sr. who passed away on December 20, 2005. He also leaves his grandchildren, Christina O’Neil and Philip Pastorelli, and Krysta O’Neil and Paul Cooke, all of Utica; James “Jay” and Shawn Greco of Albany; James, Jr. and Christine Greco of Florida; Marye and Dan Ianno, and John Robert Greco and Kayley Tartaglia, all of Utica, and Ashlee Greco; his great-grandchildren, Reese Greco; Michael Smithling, Isabella Smithling, and their father, Michael Smithling; Jordan Cooke, Everette Cooke; and Emmelyn Ianno; his brother, Alan Greco of North Carolina; his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws, Dorothy M. Peppenelli, Donna Peppenelli, and Sharon Peppenelli. He was predeceased by his in-laws, Delores Ann Peppenelli, Philip and Jean Peppenelli, James “Mousey” and Mary Peppenelli, Joseph Peppenelli, John and Isle Peppenelli, and Anthony and Sandra Peppenelli. The family will honor and commemorate John’s life at a private time. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no public visitation. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery will take place privately and at the convenience of the family.
