Harold W. Greer

Mr. Harold W. Greer, age 87, of Deerfield, passed away on Tuesday, March 03, 2009 at the Heritage Healthcare Center with his loving family by his side. Born in Utica on October 11, 1921, Harold was the son of the late Harold J. and Helen (Murphy) Greer. He was raised and educated locally. A veteran of World War II, he served his country in the U. S. Army stationed stateside. On May 10, 1947 he married the former Elizabeth J. Ford with whom he shared a blessed union of 60 years, together with their three children and their grandchildren. Harold worked as a U. S. Postal Service carrier for many years prior to his retirement. His friends and loved ones will remember him as a caring and loving individual who was always happy and who found fulfillment in life by caring for his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed the warm weather sports of golfing and fishing when he travelled to Myrtle Beach. He was a member of the American Legion Post #1376 in New Hartford, and a parishioner of St. Peter’s Church. Harold is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his daughter, Sharon McNerney of New Hartford; his sons and daughter-in-law, Neil Greer of Deerfield, and Fred and Janice Greer of New Hartford; his grandchildren, Justin Cichon, Brendan and Anna McNerney, Ryan and Catherine McNerney, and Sean McNerney, and their father, Dr. John McNerney; his great-grandchildren, Dylan McNerney, Anthony McNerney, and a soon-to-be expected great-grandchild in July. Survivors also include his sisters and brother-in-law, Bernadette Dubiel of NY Mills, Margaret and Henry Cockerham of TX, and Helen Whitney of NJ; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter and Winona Greer of Utica, and Michael and Sumiko Greer of CA; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws, Helen and Harry Kerr, John and Sue Ford, and Sally Greer. He also leaves many dear and cherished friends. He was predeceased by his brothers, Earl Greer, and Joseph “Buddy” Greer; and his in-laws, Agnes Ford, Elizabeth Ford, George and Florence Ford, Stanley Dubiel, and Chester Whitney. The family would like to thank the entire staff of the 6th floor at the Heritage Healthcare Center for their years of care and concern for Harold. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. The American Legion Post #1376 will gather at the funeral home to perform ritualistic services at 6:30 p.m. By family request, please omit floral offerings. For those wishing to do so, please consider memorial donations in Harold’s honor to the Abraham House or the Stevens-Swan Humane Society; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Harold’s funeral service will commence on Friday afternoon at 12:00 from the funeral home and at 1:00 at St. Peter’s Church where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with Military Honors. Interment will take place in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Waterville at the convenience of the family.
