Grace M. (Granato) SanFilippo

Mrs. Grace M. (Granato) SanFilippo, age 96, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 17, 2009 at the Presbyterian Home for CNY, Inc. with her devoted family by her side. Born in Utica on September 14, 1912, Grace was the daughter of the late Giuseppe and Vincenzina (Aceto) Granato. She was raised and educated locally. On June 29, 1935 she was joined in marriage to Peter SanFilippo with whom she shared 43 years in a wonderful, devoted union prior to his passing on October 25, 1978; Grace and Peter were always there for each other. During her working days, Grace was employed as a seamstress at various area knitting mills. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Grace was always ready to help, she was caring, giving, and thought of others before herself. Whoever walked in her path encountered her kindness. She was a gracious host and an outstanding cook who welcomed all to her home. During her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting. She enjoyed visiting the Whitesboro Senior Center, and she took many trips with religious groups, most notably to the Auriesville Shrine. She was a parishioner of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Church and a former member of the Altar Rosary Society. Grace is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Paul Matter of Wappinger Falls, NY; her son, Salvatore SanFilippo and Shirley Allison of Winchester, VA; her grandchildren, Dr. Deborah Murray and her husband Steven, Kimberly and Michael Heslin, Paula and Martin Mahoney; Michael Angelo SanFilippo and fiancée Loretta Meola, Anthony Joseph “A.J.” and Amy SanFilippo, Dominick John and Christina SanFilippo, Vyncenzo Gianni Peter SanFilippo, and their mother, Christina SanFilippo; and her great-grandchildren, Megan Murray and Steven Murray; Michael, Kerri, and Kayleigh Heslin; Grace, and Nora Mahoney; Shelby Grace SanFilippo and Brady SanFilippo; Dakota and Chaz SanFilippo; Anthony and Frankie Meola; and her little friend, Shawn Foy. Survivors also include her sister, Theresa Scavo of Whitesboro; all of her godchildren; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and sister-in-law, Elinor Granato. She also leaves her dear friends, Vito Montecalvo, and Joseph Passalacqua. She was predeceased by her sister, Mary SanFilippo; her brothers, Dominick, Joseph, and Sam Granato. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Presbyterian Home for CNY, Inc., especially acknowledging Lucy Viti, Wendy Benton, Becky Covel, Shannon Travis, Shannon Rowland, Tom Nitzke, Steve Szmurlo, and Shalonna Stimpson for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Grace and her family. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1-5 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. By family request, please omit floral offerings. Grace’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will be held privately. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
