Mrs. Germaine Mary "Geri" (LaPointe) Furman

Mrs. Germaine Mary “Geri” (LaPointe) Furman, age 93, passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Thursday, October 17, 2013, at the St. Joseph Nursing Home. Born in Montreal, in the Canadian province of Quebec on August 30, 1920, Germaine was the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine LaPointe. She was raised and educated in Montreal and Vermont. She met William “Bill” Furman while employed at the Navy Depot in Scotia, NY and they were married on June 1, 1952. Geri cherished her husband in heart, love, intellect, and devotion. She shared 39 years with Bill until his passing on May 20, 1991. A practical and hard-working person, Geri held positions at various area businesses, lastly at Eden Park Nursing Home. As a devout Catholic, she considered her family as her first priority. Her indomitable character and vivacious personality allowed her to confront adversity with courage and grace. Geri knew first-hand the hardships and struggles of society and because of that, her caring and compassion were carried closely in her heart and she instilled the values of social justice to her loved ones. She cherished day trips with her family, and she enjoyed cooking dishes that reflected her French/Canadian heritage. She was a parishioner of St. Frances DeSales Church. Geri is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, William “Bill” and Linda Furman of Utica, and John and Laurie Furman of Vernon; her grandchildren, Sean, Liam, and Olivia Furman, all of Vernon; her step-grandchildren, Randy, Amanda, and Jennifer; and her sister, Jeannette Nosal of Schenectady. Her extended family includes many nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families, with special mention of Andrè, Peter, John, James, and Albert; and her sister-in-law, Jeanne LaPointe of Schenectady. She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Arthur LaPointe, Albert and Georgine LaPointe, and Lucian “Louie” and Mickey LaPointe; her brother-in-law, John Nosal; and her sisters-in-law, Helen Grabowski, and Dorothy Kaminski. The family extends heartfelt appreciation to the staff of the St. Joseph Nursing Home for the care and compassion offered to Geri during her stay; and the personnel of the St. Elizabeth Medical Center for their professional efforts. Visitation will be held Monday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., Utica, corner of Hammond Ave. Expressions of sympathy in the form of donations may be made to the Carmelite Guild; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Geri’s funeral service and Celebration of Life which will commence on Tuesday morning at 10:30 at the St. Joseph Nursing Home Chapel, 2535 Genesee Street, where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. Abe Esper. Interment will take place in St. John’s Cemetery in Amsterdam at the convenience of the family.
