Mr. Frank "Hank" Scalise

Mr. Frank “Hank” Scalise, went to be with the Lord Monday, November 2, 2015 with his family by his side. Frank was born and raised in Utica. He was the son of the late Ottavio and Carmella (Clerico) Scalise. He graduated from T.R. Proctor High School in 1945. After graduation, Frank became a proud member of the United States Navy. Frank honorably served his country during WWII. After the war, Frank went on to graduate from Syracuse University at Utica College and St. Lawrence University with a Masters in Social Work. Frank was an avid sports enthusiast, playing and coaching various sports his entire life. While at Utica College, Frank formed and coached the first women’s soccer team. On June 9th 1951 Frank married Joan Lee Williams. Frank and Joan shared 64 loving years together. Their lives were filled with love. Their mutual respect for one another was evident in their dedication to each other. Frank began his extensive career with Oneida County in 1951. In 1959 he was appointed Director of Probation. During that time, Frank was a pioneer and in part responsible for the successful implementation of electronic monitoring systems in Oneida County and nationwide. Frank was instrumental in drafting the original grant that established the Insight House, where he served on the Board of Directors as Treasurer. Frank retired in 1990 but remained active in various organizations and served on numerous boards offering his time and talent. He was passionate in his desire to make a difference in people’s lives. He was a charitable man who would help anyone in need. He had a knack for bringing out the best in people. Frank accepted everyone for who and what they were. He was a man who believed everyone deserved a second chance. Frank engaged life in so many ways but his family was the core of his happiness. As a Dad and important person in many lives he taught the lesson “there is no such word as can’t”. He displayed patience and was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He supported his grandchildren with great thoughtfulness. He shared stories of his life and spent countless hours reading to them. Frank left a lasting impression on all those he encountered, a tribute to a life well lived. Frank is survived by his beloved wife, Joan; his children, Carmen Lee Scalise, Frank Anthony and Irene Scalise, Steven and Diane Scalise, Vince Scalise, Kim Meola, and Carla Scalise; his grandchildren, Gloria and Joe Piazza, Reneé and Gabe Mattson, and Frank Scalise; Mark Scalise; Trevor Scalise, and Jake Meola; and Brianna Scalise; his great-granddaughter, Ana Lucia Mattson; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Nicholas and Ruth Scalise, and Joseph and MaryBeth Scalise. His extended family includes many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws, Rosalie Scalise, and L. Gale Williams. He was blessed with many wonderful friends who enriched his life, but it would be remiss not to acknowledge his lifelong friend, Ben Turi and his wife Toni. He was predeceased by his brothers, Anthony Scalise, and Pasquale Scalise; and his sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and George Picente, Josephine and Joseph Fasone, Philomena “Phyllis” Scalise, Mary Scalise, Beatrice and Albert Bauer, and Rose and Stuart Service. The family holds dear the professional guidance and kindness of Dr. Jerry Sloan and his staff. The family will honor and commemorate Frank’s life at a private time. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Frank’s funeral service and Celebration of Life which will commence on Saturday morning at 9:30 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish where his Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. James Cesta and con-celebrant Fr. Paul Drobin with Military Honors conferred. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of Mass.
