Florence L. (LaParne) Scalzo

Mrs. Florence (LaParne) Scalzo, age 89, formerly of New Hartford and currently of Utica, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at the St. Joseph Nursing Home. Born in Frankfort, NY on May 17, 1921, Florence was the daughter of the late Benedetto and Josephine (Bono) LaParne. She was raised and educated in Frankfort. On October 7, 1939 she married Peter J. Scalzo who passed away on December 14, 2001; together the couple shared a mutually loving and devoted relationship of 62 years. Florence lived with her husband Peter on the Scalzo Dairy Farm located on Paris Hill Road. She was employed at Mele Manufacturing for 15 years, the position from which she retired. Florence was an active, energetic person and traveled with her husband, especially to Canada to visit their grandchildren. She took pride in her extensive flower gardens, as well as knitting and gifting her hand crafted afghans to her loved ones. She loved dancing, and playing yahtzee and cards with family and friends. She was a parishioner of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. Florence is survived by her daughter, Joyce A. Nicholson of Seneca Falls, NY. She cherished the memory of her son-in-law, Gary J. Nicholson, who passed away on November 5, 1988. She also leaves her grandchildren, Jeffrey M. and Marisol Nicholson of Franklin, MA, and John R. Nicholson of Santa Monica, CA; her great-grandchildren, Peter, Noah, and Aria Nicholson, all of MA; her sisters, Rose Matranga of CA, Grace Pugliese of Utica; her brother and sister-in-law, Joseph LaParne and Mary of AZ; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and her sister-in-law, Connie LaParne of CA. She was predeceased by her sisters, Sophie Gaetano, Josephine Juliano, Mary Mangiagli, Elizabeth LaParne, and Santa Reid; her brothers, Dominick and Samuel and Benedict LaParne; and her in-laws, Nancy LaParne, Mary LaParne, Antoinette LaParne, Anthony Gaetano, Frank Pugliese, Joseph Matranga, Richard Reid, Joseph Juliano, Carmen Scalzo, Sadie and Donald Wilson, Anthony and Columba Scalzo, Joseph and Josephine Scalzo, Louis and Angela Scalzo, Margaret and Santo Serianni, Bertha and Dennis Presite, Mary and Salvatore Pasquale, and Harry Wert. The family is deeply appreciative of the entire staff of the St. Joseph Nursing Home where conscientious and loving care for Florence was offered with great respect for her dignity and with unbounded sensitivity for her feelings. They were of immeasurable comfort and support to her and to her family. Visitation will be held Thursday (today) from 4:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Expressions of sympathy in the form of donations may be made in lieu of floral offerings to the St. Joseph Nursing Home, 2535 Genesee St., Utica, NY 13501; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Florence’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Friday morning at 8:30 from the funeral home and at 9:30 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Fr. David Sambor. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
