Fannie (Curcio) Spatuzzi

Mrs. Filomena "Fannie" (Curcio) Spatuzzi, age 95, of Utica, passed away on Monday, May 18, 2009 at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center with her loving family by her side. Born in Oneida, NY on September 11, 1913, Filomena was the daughter of the late Joseph and Giovanna (LaBella) Curcio. She was raised and educated in Utica schools and would be fondly remembered by her classmates as “Fannie Curch”. On October 9, 1943 she married Samuel Spatuzzi with whom she shared 24 years prior to his passing in 1967; Fannie and Sam had a marriage that was characteristic of their era and revolved around family life. During her earlier years, Fannie was employed as a puzzle maker with Madmar Quality Company, and subsequently worked as a machinist with Divine Brothers. Fannie knew the responsibilities and the caring nature of providing for her family, her home, and also saw to the needs of her father-in-law. She was a great cook and an excellent baker, and those who knew her talents also knew that her recipes could not be replicated. During her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting, and she bestowed many of her crafts to her family. She was a faith-filled woman graced with a spirited character and adventuresome nature. She was a former member of the East Side Senior Center and a parishioner of St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church where she was an active member of many parish organizations including the Assumption Society. Fannie is survived by her children and their families, Samuel R. “Nitro” Spatuzzi, and Mary Theresa Zupancic, both of Utica, and Joseph N. and Wendy Spatuzzi of Sauquoit; her grandchildren, Carol Anne Rys, Michelle Spatuzzi-Starczewski, Richard and Lisa Zupancic, Timothy and Julie Zupancic, Carla Zupancic and Tennell Moorehand, Frank and Amanda Zupancic, Joelle and Alex Almas, and Janese Spatuzzi; her great-grandchildren, Stephen, Jessica, Tiffany, Michael, Marc, Talia, Richard, Zechariah, Ty, Timmy, Skyler, Dominick, Taniya, Tennell, Jr., Marcello, Arianna, Frank, Andrew, and Matthew; and her great-great-grandson, Anthony. Survivors also include her sister, Jennie Roccosalvo; her brother, Anthony Curcio; her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins, especially acknowledging Marie Talento and Frank LaBella; and her sister-in-law, Betty Spatuzzi. She was predeceased by her sisters, Felicia Curcio and Rosemary Dubuss; and her brothers, Patsy Curcio and Michael Curcio. The family expresses heartfelt thanks to Dr. Dilip Kachare and the staff at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center Special Care and Progressive Care units who were exceptional in their concern; to the Heritage Health Care Rehabilitation Center, the Senior Network especially social worker Sandy Piacentino, and healthcare aide, Naiomi Seville from the Presbyterian Home for CNY, Inc. A special thank-you also to her niece, Felicia Roccosalvo, her nephews, Joseph Roccosalvo, and Mark Rodill; and her great-nephew, Tony Tucciarone, for their kindness and special attention. Visitation will be held Saturday from 1:00-4:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc. 932 South St. corner of Hammond Ave. Fannie’s funeral service will commence on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 from the funeral home and at 5:00 at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
