Mrs. Eugenia "Jennie" (Syrotynski) Egitto

Mrs. Eugenia “Jennie” (Syrotynski) Egitto, age 93, of Utica, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 5, 2011 at the Charles T. Sitrin Health Care Center. Eugenia was born in Utica on June 16, 1918, the daughter of the late John, Sr. and Anna Syrotynski. After Anna’s passing, Jennie knew the motherly love of Julia (Bilaruska) Syrotynski. She was raised and educated in Utica, and was so proud of the fact that she obtained her General Equivalency Diploma at the age of 56! On May 31, 1941 she married Peter D. Egitto with whom she shared 46 years prior to his passing on March 5, 1988. Jennie and Peter owned and operated the P. & J. Confectionary Store once located at the corner of Bleecker and Wetmore Streets. Eugenia also worked as an assembler at the UNIVAC Corporation for 3 years, and held a position at General Electric. She also found time to volunteer at the libraries of St. Agnes School, Columbus School, and Albany Street School. Among her many admirable qualities, Jennie was a meticulous woman, always diligent in her domestic duties and detailed in her dress. She was a lady who carried within her the grace and dignity of a bygone era. She was a parishioner of St. Agnes Church. Jennie is survived by her daughter, Janice Okey of Utica. She mourned the loss of her son-in-law, John S. Okey, who passed away on June 27, 1994. She also leaves her granddaughter, Jennifer Okey of Utica; and her great-grandson, Dominick, whom his G.G. Ma lovingly called “Little One”. Also left to mourn her passing are her brother and sister-in-law, Samuel and Marge Syrotynski of Clifton Park; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, sister-in-law, Carmelita Syrotynski of New Hartford; and the wonderful neighbors and friends she has known over the years. She was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Walter Konopelski; and her brothers and sister-in-law, Michael and Dorothy Syrotynski, and John “Butch” Syrotynski, Jr. Jennie would like to thank the Anisworth family and the Eck family for transporting her to Church on Sundays; the Utica Transit bus drivers who became her friends; Tony, for his gentle thoughtfulness; and the staff of the Sitrin Home Sequoia Cottage, especially Peg and Cindy, for their compassion in caring for Jennie as their own. There will be a family viewing Wednesday morning from 9-10. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Jennie’s funeral service and Celebration of Life which will commence on Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. Joseph Salerno. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the Mass. Those wishing to express an act of kindness in Jennie’s honor may make a contribution to the Stevens Swan Humane Society, the Make-a-Wish Foundation, or a charity of choice; envelopes will be available at the service. Entombment will take place in Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum at the convenience of the family.
