Elveda May (Calhoun) Soper

Mrs. Elveda May (Calhoun) Soper, age 86, passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at the St. Luke’s Home with the love and support of her family by her side. Born in Gloversville NY on October 29, 1928, Elveda was the daughter of the late Gerald and Delphine (Smith) Calhoun. She was raised and educated in Gloversville. Her family instilled in her traditional values of honesty, social justice, and a good work ethic. On October 10, 1948, Elveda married Donald W. Soper, a union that lasted 54 years and knew the blessing of their children and families. Donald passed away in September of 2003. At one time, Elveda held employment with the St. Elizabeth Medical Center. At the same time, she enjoyed the responsibility of crossing guard and her cherished time as a child caregiver. Elveda was happiest when she was fulfilling her most joyous duty as a mother. She had a sparkle and twinkle in her eyes that came to light through the love of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and that legacy of love will remain in their hearts. During her spare time, Elveda enjoyed bowling, painting by numbers, computer games, “wii” golf, and card games, especially Uno. Elveda is survived by her children and their families, David W. Soper of AZ (whose life companion, Charlene Cavalier, passed away on May 22, 2015), Dale A. and Joe Scialdone of Marcy, Douglas A. Soper of Utica, and Donna J. and John Gossage of AZ; and her grandchildren and their families, Michele, Rhonda, Katie, Nicholas, Timothy, Joe Jr., Christopher, and Gregory. She cherished the memory of her beloved granddaughter, Jennifer Gossage, who passed away in 2002. She will also be missed by her many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends, Dale Allen and Yvonne Cherubin, and Mary Kent. She was predeceased by her brother, Raymond Calhoun; and her sister, Beverly J. Seeley. The family extends appreciation to all the staff at the St. Luke’s Home Clark West for their care and compassion. Visitation will be held Wednesday morning from 10:00-11:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Elveda's funeral service and Christian Celebration of Life will commence on Wednesday at 11:00 at the funeral home immediately upon conclusion of visitation with Sister Betty Giarrusso, CSJ, officiating. Interment will follow graveside at Forest Hill Cemetery.
