Mrs. Eleanor "Ellie" (Ferrance) Summa

UTICA - Mrs. Eleanor “Ellie” (Ferrance) Summa, age 89, passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2019 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center with her loving family by her side. Born in Lowville on April 21, 1930, Eleanor was the daughter of the late John and Jane (Chmielewski) Ferrance. A graduate of Lowville Academy, Ellie was proud that she recently attended her 70th class reunion! In her earlier days, Ellie enjoyed time she spent on the family farm. On May 2, 1964 Ellie married Rocco J. Summa at the “Family House” in North Utica, a loving union that spanned 55 years. She was employed by the New York Telephone Company as an operator. Upon the birth of her son, Ellie left the workforce to be a stay-at-home mom and raise him. Ellie enjoyed sewing, reading and watching any political program on TV. She was an avid fan of tennis and was especially fond of Roger Federer. She also enjoyed watching the New York Yankees. Ellie was a communicant of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. Ellie is survived by her husband, Rocco J.; her son, Brian J. Summa; granddaughters, Alexandra N. Summa, and Marissa L. Summa, both of Colonie, NY, and their mother Andrea. She also leaves her sister, Frances LaVancha of Lowville; brother, James “Jim” Ferrance of CA; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and many close friends from childhood and high school. She was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Rudy Szijarto; in-laws, Les and Patricia Diven, Neil Kirch, and Everett LaVancha; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carmen and Philomena Summa. She also had the blessings of Elena Summa, Carmen’s second spouse. The family extends sincere thanks to Dr. Kevin McCormick and the nurses and staff of the Buffalo Unit at the Masonic Care Community for their care and compassion. In keeping with Ellie’s wishes, there will be no public visitation. By family request, please omit flowers. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Eleanor’s funeral service and Celebration of Life which will commence on Friday at 12:00 noon at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of Mass. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
