Mr. Donald J. "Don" Scarafile

WHITESBORO - Mr. Donald J. “Don” Scarafile, age 85, passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center with his loving family by his side. Born in Utica on July 13, 1932, Donald was the son of the late Oronzo and Frances (Sansone) Scarafile. Raised and educated locally, he was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. He furthered his studies at the Fort Schuyler Maritime School in New York City receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. On June 16, 1956 he married the former Marie Bartolotta with whom he shared 58 years in a union founded on common faith, love, and respect. Marie passed away on April 10, 2015. Don held positions at Griffiss Air Force Base as a Facilities & Communication Engineer, first supporting the RADC, then the GEECIA, and lastly as a Supervisor at the 485 EIG, the position from which he retired in 1988. Don was a man of outstanding values. He was a wonderful man, blessed with a quiet manner and a gentle frame of mind. Don shared a dry sense of humor and was an honest friend. As a patriarch, he appreciated his family and focused on providing, protecting, and pleasing them. He looked forward to traveling to family events and always attended his grandchildren’s activities. He was a loving and supportive presence in their lives. He was an avid golfer frequenting the Crestwood Golf Course. He also enjoyed his visits to the Turning Stone Casino. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and The Catholic Community of Whitesboro at St. Paul’s Church. Don is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Donna Scarafile of Utica, John Scarafile of Whitesboro, Donald J. “Don” and Susan Scarafile of Waldorf MD, and Steven and Janet Scarafile of Manchester NH; and his grandchildren, Michael and Nicole Scarafile, Amanda Scarafile and Tom Luley, Nicole Scarafile, Anna Scarafile; Phillip Scarafile, Lexie Scarafile, Chris Scarafile, and Katie Scarafile. He also leaves his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, in-laws, Angelo and Ethel “Honey” Bartolotta of Philadelphia PA; goddaughter Marguerite Kershaw; and friends, Sam and Rosalie Fallove. The family extends their thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department at Faxton-St. Luke’s for their compassionate care and professionalism. The family will honor and commemorate Don’s life at a private gathering. Please omit floral offerings. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Donald's funeral service and Celebration of Life which will commence on Tuesday morning at 11:30 at The Catholic Community of Whitesboro at St. Paul's Church where his Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. Thomas Durant. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the service. Entombment will take place in the Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum at Holy Trinity Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
