Mrs. Domenica E. "Mickey" (Vilardi) Madia

Mrs. Domenica E. “Mickey” (Vilardi) Madia, age 90, of Utica, passed away on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center with her loving family by her side. Born in Utica on October 27, 1921, Domenica was the daughter of the late Frank and Adeline “Dolly” (Maida) Vilardi. In 1941 she married Joseph A. Madia, Sr. who passed away on December 12, 1969. As a couple, they focused their love on providing a good life for their children. They always had a full house with an open door for all and they enjoyed gathering with loved ones for holidays and dinners. Mickey worked at the Masonic Home in the Food Service Department for many years. Prior to that, she worked at various area businesses to help support her family during the times when she was needed most. She was tiny in stature with a big heart, and a strong work ethic. As the matriarch of her family, she took care of everyone, and was constant to their needs. Her grandchildren were everything to her and she helped raise them as if they were her own. She raised her family in the traditional Italian home and appreciated the simple things in life. Her greatest times were spent surrounded by family especially on their Sunday picnics. In her later years, she enjoyed sewing and would do alterations and hemming for anyone just to show she cared. She looked forward to socializing with her girlfriends at the Marino Ruggiero Apartment Complex where she lived for many years, having coffee, cooking, shopping, and surrounding herself with fun and good times. A self-sacrificing woman who never put herself first, Mickey was loved by all who had the privilege to know her. Mickey is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Mario LoMedico of North Utica; her sons and daughters-in-law, Gaetano “Gary” and Theresa Madia of Boca Raton, FL, and Joseph A., Jr. and Elaine Madia of Utica. Always close to her heart was the memory of her son, Frank C. Madia, who preceded her in death on August 21, 2002. She also leaves her grandchildren, Gary and Susan Madia, Joseph Madia III, Frank Madia, Esq. and his wife Carlaine, Jeffrey Madia, Tricia and Joseph Spina, John and Marie Madia, Mario LoMedico, Marc LoMedico, and Nicholas Madia Nardi. She also cherished the memory of her beloved granddaughter, Christine Madia, who preceded her. In addition, she is survived by her many great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws, Jean Vilardi, Kathleen Madia, and Esther Madia. She was predeceased by her brothers, James Vilardi, and Carmen Vilardi; and her in-laws, Anthony L. Madia, Sr., Frank and Rose Madia, Gaetano “Guy” Madia, and Thomas Madia. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff and volunteers at the Presbyterian Home “family” who stole Mickey’s heart just as she stole theirs. A special thank you to the nursing staff of the 3rd Floor at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center for their guidance and compassion during Mickey’s final days. Visitation will be held Sunday from 3:00-5:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc. 932 South St. corner of Hammond Ave. Mickey's funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Monday morning at 10:30 at St. Anthony and St. Agnes Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Msgr. Francis Willenburg. Interment will take place in St. Agnes Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
