Mr. Dean A. Olmstead

Dean Allen Olmstead, age 84, passed away after a long illness on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Glenfield, NY, the only child of the late Ernest and Florence (Cass) Olmstead, who were the most devoted grandparents to Dean’s children. He was married to the love of his life, Lynda Colella with whom he shared 63 years. After serving in the US Navy toward the end of WWII, Dean spent his entire working life at the General Electric Co., always committed to taking care of his family, no matter the cost. It was outside of work however, that his real talents blossomed. From designing a local golf course to building his and Lynda’s long-time home outside of Hamilton – and almost everything in it – there wasn’t anything he couldn’t figure out how to do. Whether it was refurbishing boats, learning to fly, painting pictures or constructing summer camps of one sort or another, Dean loved trying something new. But it was when he became a grandfather that “Boppy” really came into his own. Elaborate tree-houses, spaceship beds, visits to California – Dean was absolutely devoted to his grandchildren, and he will be sorely missed and remembered always with the greatest of love and respect by his entire family. Besides his wife Lynda, Dean is survived by his three children and a son-in-law, Steve Olmstead of Fairfield, IA, Sharon Olmstead of Utica, and Suzanne and Andy Morgan of Whitesboro; his grandchildren, Garrett and Stephanie Morgan, Emily Gravett and fiance, Adris Gelani, Ben Morgan and fiancée Nicole Cornacchia, and Mackenzie Morgan; and his great-granddaughter, Lillyan Grace Morgan, whose soon-to-be little sibling, if a boy, will be named after his great-grandfather. The family would like to thank the entire staff on the third floor of the Allen-Calder wing at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center and those in the Rehab Unit at St. Luke’s Home for their exceptional care and compassion.
