Mr. David A. Carpinella Sr.

New Hartford- Mr. David A. Carpinella, Sr., age 76, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, October 7, 2022. At the time of his passing his beloved son, David Carpinella Jr., and sister Marylou Carpinella and Jim Obernesser were by his side, and he was in the hearts of his children and those he loved most. Born in Utica on July 23, 1946, David was the son of the late Angelo and Louise (Falchi) Carpinella. Raised and educated locally, he was a graduate of Frankfort Schuyler High School and continued his education at Suny Oswego and Mohawk Valley Community College. On March 18, 1969, he married the love of his life, the former Kathleen J. “Kathy” McOwen. His heart was broken when his beloved Kathy passed away on June 22, 2022. They were inseparable and shared a rare and everlasting love and friendship. They were blessed with three beautiful children who will miss him dearly. Dave dedicated over 40 years to his career at Special Metals, holding various positions in the plant and later in management. There he made many lifelong friendships. He also served in the U.S. National Guard. In his younger days you could find Dave at the ice rink, assisting with hockey games, passionately cheering on Mike and David, or watching Lori figure skate. You could even find him playing hockey in the men’s league. He also enjoyed running, and completed the Boilermaker Road Race several times alongside his kids and his “second” daughter Brenda. David’s true passion was always nature. He loved being outside, camping, taking long hikes in the woods, hunting, and fishing. He spent many fall mornings deer hunting, and many summer days fishing on Oneida Lake. He was the happiest when spending time at his camp on Fish Creek (Paradise Cove) with Kathy, fishing, boating, and walking their dog. They enjoyed family visits, and Dave loved to take his grandson Anthony on early morning fishing trips followed by a big breakfast. On good fishing days, Dave would come in with his catch for the day and Kathy would happily fry them up on the spot for everyone to share! Often, his other passion, the New York Yankees, would be playing on a nearby radio. Depending on the score you would see David’s sweet grin or his angry pout! He proudly wore his Yankee baseball hat every day and never missed a game. He even named a couple of his dogs after former Yankee players – Jeter, and Munson! David was a quiet man with a huge heart. He was very passionate about the things he loved and would do anything for his family or friends. He truly embraced becoming “Pop Pop” to his grandchildren, and you could see that in his bright blue eyes. He would share fishing and hunting stories with Anthony, talk hockey and football with Michael, and you could find him searching through his basement for new trucks to surprise his little buddy, Nolan. His eyes were even brighter when he was blessed with his first granddaughter, Ava; he adored her smile and beautiful eyes. David will be truly missed by his daughter, Lori M. (Carpinella) Wolverton; his sons and daughters-in-law, Michael D. “Mike” Carpinella and Sally Peters, and David A. Jr. and Jenna Carpinella; his grandchildren who were the sparkle in his eye, Anthony, and Michael Wolverton; and Nolan, and Ava Carpinella; and his devoted sister Marylou Carpinella and Jim Obernesser. In addition, he will be remembered by so many beloved family members, in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews so very loved, but too numerous to mention, along with Brenda Majka, John and Vilroy Malagese, Bobby and Marilyn Foley, and of course his canine companion, Munson. He was predeceased by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Thomas P. and Jane M. (Myers) McOwen. David’s family will celebrate his life privately at a later date.
