Catherine A. "Katie" (Marino) Monterose

Mrs. Catherine A. “Katie” (Marino) Monterose, age 91, of Utica, passed away on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at the Presbyterian Home for CNY, Inc. with her loving family by her side. Born in Utica on October 8, 1921, Catherine was the daughter of the late Albert and Catherine (Cittadino) Marino. Raised and educated locally, she was a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School/Class of 1940. On February 7, 1948 she married James P. Monterose with whom she shared 64 years in a blessed relationship that enhanced their lives; Katie and James truly loved each other. Much like many other women of her generation, Catherine began her working career at various area knitting mills. She then held a position as a clerk at the landmark Boston Store. Lastly, she was employed as a part-time nurse’s aide at the Sunset Nursing Home while she concurrently raised her family. A teacher at heart and one who adored Jesus, Katie embraced and lived the virtues of patience, kindness, tolerance, and acceptance. With kind instruction, she taught them to her children while promoting their education. She was always attentive to her loved ones and their needs, and was appreciated at the matriarch of the family. She was meticulous in her home and fastidious in her demeanor. She loved spending time with her sisters whom she loved as best friends. She was a dependable, wonderful woman who saw goodness in others, and she graciously enhanced relationships in her life. In her earlier years, she enjoyed reading, sewing, mending, and creating hand sewn quilts that are family heirlooms. A true follower of the Lord, she was devoted to Monday Night Novenas which she attended with her daughter, Camille. She was a member of the Third Order of Franciscans and participated in the Perpetual Adoration on each Tuesday at St. Joseph & St. Patrick Church. She was a parishioner of the Church of Our Lady. Katie is survived by her husband James; her daughter and son-in-law, Camille R. and Gary M. Caulkins of New Hartford; her son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Susan Montrose of Whitesboro; and her grandchildren, Jessica Caulkins, Amanda and David Agneta, Kate and Neil Curtin, and Erin Montrose; and her great-grandchildren, Aidan Agneta and Adeline Curtin. She also leaves behind her sisters and brothers-in-law, Jennie R. and Nicholas V. Risucci of Utica, Rose M. Moccaldi of Utica, Mary and John A. LaRocco of Utica, and Clara E. Mastrangelo; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws Anthony L. “Tony” Moccaldi, Lucy Marino, and Ruby Monterose. She was predeceased by her sister, Anna V. Moccaldi; her brother, Anthony Marino; and her in-laws Anthony and Veronica Monterose, Joseph and Grace Monterose, Bruno and Jane Monterose, Emilio and Betty Monterose, Frank and Jean Monterose, Dominick Monterose, and Fradino “Dino” Mastrangelo. Katie’s family would like to give special thanks and appreciation to the nurses and staff of the Cedar Unit of the Presbyterian Home for CNY, Inc. for the loving compassion and genuine care shown to Katie. Gratitude is also extended to Mary Ellen Van Allen for bringing the eucharist to Katie on a weekly basis. In keeping with Catherine’s wishes, there will be no public visitation. Her family will honor her life at a private time. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral service and Celebration of Life which will commence on Monday afternoon at 12:00 at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. Joe Salerno. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of Mass. Those wishing to express an act of kindness in lieu of flowers may make a donation to the Multiple Sclerosis Society National Upstate New York Chapter or the Palliative Care Program at the Presbyterian Home for CNY, Inc.; envelopes will be available at the service. Entombment will take place in Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum at Holy Trinity Cemetery at the convenience of the family. The Eannace Funeral Home, 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. is providing the guidance in lighting the path for the Monterose family in commemorating Katie’s life.
