Mrs. Catherine J. (Cough) Compo

PORT LEYDEN, NY- Mrs. Catherine J. (Cough) Compo, age 66, passed away on Monday, November 13, 2017 at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center with her loving family by her side. Born in Pierrepont Manor on April 13, 1951, Catherine was the daughter of the late Frederick and Marjorie J. (Mahon) Cough. She was educated and graduated from the South Lewis Central School System. She continued her studies at the Utica School of Beauty Culture. She was the mother of two beautiful children from prior relationships. On July 21, 1990, she married John M. Compo; they blended their families and enjoyed their 27 years together. Cathy worked as a hairdresser at several area salons as well as held positions at Lolly Manufacturing Co. in Port Leyden, and for a time was employed as a CNA at the Sunset Nursing Home, the Stonehedge Nursing Home, and Rome Hospital. At all her places of employment, she displayed a good work ethic. She had a sunny personality, and the love in her heart shined on her children. Her life’s journey made her a stronger and more responsible person. From these experiences she gained much wisdom. Cathy loved the outdoors, her garden, tanning in the sunshine, or enjoying get-aways with her husband John and the time spent at the family camp where she fished for hours. She was outgoing and very social, which blessed her with many friends. She also had an affinity for her canine and feline companions throughout the years, including her current pets, Prince, her Shelty, and Wiggles, her feline; and her late Retriever/Husky, Princess. She was a believer of the Catholic faith. Cathy was fulfilled and grateful to be a loving mom, a good wife, and an awesome grandmother who enjoyed nothing more than having all of her grandchildren at her home at any time. These were the relationships that made her life complete. Cathy is survived by her husband, John; her daughter, Michelle Freeman; her son and daughter-in-law, Michael J., Sr. and Jamie Cough; her step-children, Melissa Compo and fiancé Dennis Podkowka, Jennifer and Brad Barnes, Elizabeth and Aaron Harris, and John Compo; her grandchildren, Kayla, Matthew, Sr., Devin, Jonique, and Jyanna; Michael J. Jr., Kelsey, Jesse, Ally; Max, Kaitlyn, Christopher, Blake, and Tyler; and her eight great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her sisters, Suzanne O’Donnell, Helena Mary Cough, Barbara Cough, Elen Sullivan, and Annette Cough; her brothers, James Cough, Frederick Cough Jr., and Jonathan Cough; her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, aunt Marion Hyde; in-laws, Susan and Frank, David and Lois, and Margaret; and a multitude of friends throughout her life. She was predeceased by her infant daughter, Carrie, whose memory she held close to her heart. The family is grateful to the physicians and staff at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center for their compassionate care.
