Carol M. (Capuana) Battle

Mrs. Carol M. (Capuana) Battle, age 50, of Utica, went home on Thursday, September 10, 2009 after a courageous battle. Her passing occurred in the comfort and privacy of her home with her entire family by her side. Born in Utica on October 5, 1958, Carol is the daughter of Thelma F. (Pape) Capuana and the late Alfred “Fritz” Capuana. Raised and educated locally, she was a 1976 graduate of T. R. Proctor High School. On September 15, 1979 she married Bill Battle with whom she shared 30 memorable years; they were a loving and supportive couple, a good match for one another. Gifted with a hard work ethic, Carol was blessed to raise her own family and then assisted in caring for her great-nieces and nephews. A woman of great strength of character, her generosity of time, spirit, and giving was evident in the many acts of kindness that she unselfishly conveyed. As a mother, she truly communicated her love by inspiring quality values and principles. As a daughter, she had a special closeness with her mom, and she was also a generous sister, a thoughtful aunt and friend. Carol laughed, created laughter, and joked with the "best of them." She engaged in the battle of her life this past year, confronting all her challenges with strength and courage. She was always concerned about others, and her selflessness surpassed the standards of good will that most of us put forward. Carol felt privileged and blessed for being born into such a loving family and she celebrated the special occasions in everyone’s lives with zest and great meals. She was a talented baker and always provided a variety of her creative treats with the special intention of pleasing those for whom she baked. She was an enthusiastic Bingo player, and in her earlier years she was athletically inclined. Captivated by the power of nature, she loved the winter season and celebrated the chills of blizzards and snow storms as a source of serene and silent beauty. Carol is survived by her husband, Bill; her children, William “Billy” Battle, Jr., Michael J. Battle, and Rochelle R. Battle; and her mother, Thelma F. Capuana. Survivors also include her sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara Jo and Richard Wehrle, Sr. of Utica, and Roseanne and Charles Bateman, Jr. of Kayuta Lake; her many close nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, special aunt, Helen Jiampietro; in-laws, John and Andrea Battle, Betty Ann and Dennis Day, Sandy and Jerry Hoyland, and Vicky and Frank Romanowski; and her many wonderful friends and neighbors. She also leaves her loyal canine companions, Beags and Baby. She was predeceased by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, John “Jack” and Anna Marie Battle and numerous aunts and uncles. The family is grateful to Dr. Samir Desai, the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center, 6th Floor Oncology staff, the Faxton Regional Cancer Center and all the caring individuals there who inspired Carol to endure; and a genuine thank-you to the personnel of Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. who were welcomed into Carol’s home; they helped Carol and her family, providing peace, comfort, security, and professionalism, and were ‘family’ at such a difficult time. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial gathering in Carol’s honor which will be held on Sunday (today) from 2:00-4:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. By family request, please omit floral offerings. Final blessings for Carol will be offered on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 at the funeral home at the conclusion of visitation.
