Caroline A. (Ricci) Squillace

UTICA - Caroline A. (Ricci) Squillace, age 97, peacefully passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2020 at MVHS Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. Born in Utica on September 1, 1922, Caroline was the daughter of the late Sabatino and Stella Ricci. She was a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School/Class of 1940. A hardworking woman of her generation, Caroline held jobs at Sal Caruso Cheese Company, and Avico Spice Distributors. Her long working career culminated in a most rewarding retirement. Caroline lived a full, fruitful life. She was a wonderful mom, always active in her sons’ lives and dedicated to their wellbeing. She was proud of her Italian heritage and her cooking proved that, especially during the holidays and every Sunday—her meatballs could not be replicated, period. She had a green thumb and her vibrant, fully bloomed African violets verified that. She had a well-kept, comfortable home. She had fond memories of taking the bus to Utica’s bustling mid-century downtown to shop and hit the hot spots! She also shopped from home, and QVC was her favorite retail tv network. More than anything else, she was blessed with grandchildren who loved, respected, and honored her, and she treasured them as her greatest joy. Caroline is survived by her sons, Philip J. Squillace with whom she shared a home, and Joseph Squillace; her grandchildren, Cara Squillace, and Kaitlin Squillace; and Casey; and her adored great-grandchild, Sofia Stalarczyk. She also leaves her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Carmela Ricci; sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Steve LoPiccolo; and her best friend, Jane Melchiorre. The family extends their appreciation to the staff of MVHS Rehabilitation and Nursing Center/Clark West for the care and compassion rendered to Caroline, and for keeping her spirits up, for which her sons are so thankful. Due to current health concerns and in keeping with federal and state regulations, the family will honor Caroline’s life privately and funeral services will be held with immediate family only.
