Mrs. Betty (Gentile) DeCosty

Mrs. Betty (Gentile) DeCosty, age 85, currently of New Hartford and formerly of Utica, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2011 at the Siegenthaler Center with the love and support of her family by her side. Born in Utica on January 11, 1926, Betty was the daughter of the late Donato and Antoinette (Scoba) Gentile. Raised and educated locally, she was a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School. She shared a blessed marriage with Charles P. DeCosty until his passing in 1980; Betty and Charles were drawn to each other and their love endured through the years. Betty retired in 1988 from her position as Office Manager for the Jim Brock Insurance Agency. She loved to cook and was always in the kitchen assuming the role of both teacher and student, and was able to learn to prepare dishes from taste. She took care of her family, and forever spoiled her children and grandchildren, all the while teaching them to be strong and determined in reaching their goals, and steady and dedicated in their working life. Betty also served as a caregiver to anyone who needed her, as this was her selfless and giving way of life. She loved to host the holidays at her house, especially Christmas Eve, along with decorating, creating floral arrangements, attending cooking classes, and traveling. Blessed with a strong spirituality, she raised her family in the Catholic faith, and became deeply devoted and closer to God in her later years. She was a member of the Sts. Cosmo and Damiano Society located at the Kossuth Avenue Chapel and a communicant of St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church. Betty is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Dawn and Mark Bruzzese of Utica, and Terese “Terry” DeCosty of New Hartford; her son and daughter-in-law, Charles “Chip” and Jodie DeCosty of Clinton; her grandchildren, Lisa Brice, Paul Bruzzese, Erika DeCosty, and Jared DeCosty; and her 3 great-grandchildren. She also leaves many friends and cousins, especially acknowledging Jay Gentile. She was predeceased by her sister, Grace Gentile. The family extends a special thank-you to the Siegenthaler Center and its staff for the high standard of care and compassion shown to Betty and her family. They truly gave her the gift of life during her final days. Visitation will be held Thursday morning from 9:00-10:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Expressions of sympathy in the form of donations may be made to the Siegenthaler Center in lieu of floral offerings; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Betty’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Thursday morning at 10:00 from the funeral home and at 10:30 at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. Anthony P. LaFache. Interment will take place in St. Agnes Cemetery.
