Barbara A. "Barb" (Boehlert) Young

UTICA - Barbara A. “Barb” (Boehlert) Young, age 87, passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2018 at the Masonic Care Community of NY with her family by her side. Born in Utica on October 22, 1930, Barbara was the daughter of the late Harold E. and Margaret (McCarthy) Boehlert. She was a graduate of St. Francis De Sales High School and furthered her education at the Utica School of Commerce. At one time she was married to Terrance Ledger, a union that was blessed with three children. Terrance passed away on September 21, 2009. She entered into a second union with Les Young who has since preceded her. Barb began her work career at the renowned Hemstrought’s Bakery as a clerk. She also worked at Commercial Travelers Insurance Company as a Claims Clerk, the position from which she retired. Barb was a quiet soul. She loved the outdoors and had many wonderful friends and adventures being a member of the Tramp and Trail Club, hiking in the Adirondacks in the warmer months and cross-country skiing in the winter. She was a patient woman whose wisdom and strength were her greatest attributes in living her life. Her children and grandchildren renewed her and she was proud of all their accomplishments. She celebrated the holidays with loved ones, and as the years went by and her children matured, married, and made families of their own, she traveled to see them and treasured the times she visited them. Barb was blessed with the love and friendship of Fran Ferro who kept a watchful eye on her, and for that, and so many reasons, the family is grateful. Barb was deeply grounded in her Catholic faith and was a communicant of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. Barbara is survived by her children and their spouses, Kathi and Kevin Delphia, Patrick and Jen Ledger, and Terry “Tank” and Debbie Ledger; her grandchildren, who affectionately named her “Grandma Barbie”, Collin and April Delphia, and Cody Delphia; Forest, Beckett, and Van Ledger; Amanda, and Ethan Ledger; and her sister, Margaret “Peggy” Messina. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law, Dolores E. Boehlert, and Nan Eckmair; and friend and co-worker Janice Ludwig. She was predeceased by her brother, Richard J. “Dick” Boehlert; and her sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Charles Ferro. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Saranac Household at the Masonic Care Community who were beyond reproach in caring for Barb with compassion and dignity, with special mention of Nancy Furlong for her extensive communication and excellent care. The family will commemorate her life at a private time. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Barbara’s funeral service and Celebration of Life which will commence on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. Tom Servatius. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of Mass. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
