Anthony R. Della Gala

Mr. Anthony R. “Tony” Della Gala, age 63, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2014 at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Born in Ilion on August 24, 1950, Anthony was the son of Mary P. (Internicola) Della Gala and the late Anthony P. “Gellie” Della Gala. Raised and educated locally, he was a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School and later attended M.V.C.C. and SUNY Canton. Tony held a position with the Utica Observer-Dispatch in the Distribution Department. A landscaper and gardener by nature, he lovingly attended to his garden and plants. He also enjoyed helping his friends and neighbors beautify the scenery of their yards. Tony was a loving, caring, and generous son and a devoted father. He treasured the quality time he and his daughter shared watching NY Yankees baseball and NY Rangers Hockey games. He was an avid reader of political history. Tony is survived by his daughter, Mary Beth Maciewicz of Herkimer; and his mother, Mary P. Della Gala. He mourned the loss of his brother, Dennis N. Della Gala, who passed away on April 8, 1980. He will also be missed by his many aunts, uncles, and cousins, especially his Aunt Vita and Richard Gonyea, his cousin, Karen Shifler; and his friends, Anthony and Cathy Giruzzi and family. He was predeceased by several aunts and uncles, with special mention of his Aunt Sara (Internicola) Poccia with whom Anthony shared a closeness. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at the York Street Clinic, especially Cathi Ann Totaro, and the St. Elizabeth Medical Center, especially Lyndee Adle, for all the care and compassion shown to Anthony and his family. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Anthony’s funeral service and Celebration of Life which will commence on Thursday afternoon at 12:30 at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of Mass. Expressions of sympathy in the form of donations may be made to the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes or The Alliance for the Mentally Ill, in lieu of flowers; envelopes will be available at the service. Committal prayers will be offered at the Calvary Cemetery Chapel with entombment in Calvary Mausoleum.
