Mr. Anthony D. "Slim" Carcone Sr.

UTICA - Mr. Anthony D. “Slim” Carcone, Sr., age 78, passed on his own terms on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at MVHS at St. Elizabeth Medical Center with the love and support of his family and friends. Born in Utica on August 24, 1940, Anthony was the son of the late Anthony “Carky” Carcone and Mary (Guarascio) Jonquil. He was a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School/Class of 1958. At one time, he was married to the former Bonnie Light and to that relationship came the blessing of two sons and a lifetime of friendship to the very end. Slim held a position with the Department of Transportation as a Heavy Equipment Operator. He later became the owner and operator of Slim’s After Hours Steak & Greens Restaurant on Bleecker Street and also filled in at his mother’s restaurant, Joe & Mary’s Diner in Marcy. He then moved to Florida where he was a chef and managed the kitchen at Don’s Italian Restaurant in Singer Island. Anthony loved the sunny days of Florida, the patrons, and the friends he got to know who were part of the “Utica Gang”. Once Florida ‘ran its course’, he returned to Utica in 1986 to be closer to his family. He was a very proud man, and his family lit up his heart. Things had finally come to fruition, and he was in a ‘good place’ — he had reached a point when ‘all was good’. He said that he had “a good run” and was ready for the next part of the journey. Anthony was fair, non-judgmental, generous, and blessed with many loyal friends. He loved to babysit the grandkids, and when he arrived, he brought them pizza, wings, and a bit of wisdom. He shared with everyone, and all were welcome to share in his life. He was a great guy who lived a good life and did the right things. Holidays were special for him and good times for family and friends. He was so touched by the way his children, grandchildren, and extended family evolved into such good people leading good lives. He had a desire to keep his loved ones close and hold true to honesty and good core values. Anthony was most grateful for the respect and loyalty of his family. Although he was independent and self-sufficient, he was the patriarch of the family he started, and he got to know the minds and hearts of all of them. He never missed a beat. Slim enjoyed playing chess, and he did it with great skill. He also had a fancy for games of chance at the casino, and Poker. He was a fan of all the New York sports teams, the Yankees, Jets, and Syracuse, and he was the best “Monday morning quarterback”! He had fun playing cards with his friends at the Italian Social Club at the corner of Mohawk and Mary Street. He was also fond of music, especially Frank Sinatra, The Rat Pack, and also appreciated the 1970’s classic tunes. Anthony was a man of faith and he believed the Lord was really in charge. To a guy like Slim, it was a good combination because he had the free will to “do it his way”. Anthony is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Anthony D. Carcone Jr., and Philip and Sheila Carcone, and their mom, Bonnie Guarno; grandchildren, Ashley Carcone, Airiana Herne, Brian Dittmer; Daniel and Megan Drennen, Alissa and James Lawson, Philip and Kayla Carcone Jr., Brianna Carcone, and Kaytlyn Tooke; nine great-grandchildren; and his brother, Joseph Jonquil, and his children Pamela and Joseph. He also leaves a special niece, Roberta “Bobbie” Baron; great-nephews, Lyle Chandler and Paul Chandler; cousins, and the many good friends and family members who blessed his life. He was predeceased by his sister, Loretta Mae Valdez; mother-in-law, Agnes Light; cousins, Dominick and Carol, and Tony Guarascio; and his canine, Rocco, his additional son who loved him unconditionally. The family sends sincere thanks to the Guarascio family, Durso family, Joe Dipierro, and Pat Brindisi who were all great and loyal friends; the 3rd Floor staff at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, as well as the personnel of the ICU, especially Gary who made a difference in Anthony’s end-of-life care; and special thanks to his granddaughter Alissa who went the extra mile these past few months and has always been there for her grandpa. Visitation will be held Saturday from 2:30-4:30 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Anthony's funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Saturday at 4:30 at the funeral home upon conclusion of visitation with Pastor David Ossenfort officiating the ceremony. Interment will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
