Mrs. Anna (Bercuta) Gergi

UTICA - Mrs. Anna (Bercuta) Gergi, age 81, passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2019 in the comfort of her home. Born in the village of Bogutoe, Ukraine, on June 5, 1937, Anna was the daughter of the late Fedor and Yekaterna Bercuta. Her father died during the famine, and hard times fell upon the family. While visiting a church, she met her future husband, and in 1958, at the age of 21, she married Mikhail “Misha” Gergi and they proceeded to live in Ozernoe, Ukraine. Anna was a devoted wife, and she immediately began to care for her husband’s family. As a young adult, a blessing fell upon her soul and she grew to know the love of God. On September 29, 1999 Anna and Misha immigrated to America and made Utica their home where her daughter Yekaterna was awaiting her. Anna came to the United States with her son Vasiliy and his wife Valentina, 3 grandchildren, and her daughter Yelena and husband Fedor. Anna was a humble woman and the very best mother and grandmother. She was a natural caregiver, cook, and housekeeper, and she honored her Slavic ancestry in preparing ethnic meals and embracing her cultural traditions. A gentle soul, she had a generous spirit and was always kind to others. During her spare time, she knitted many treasured articles of clothing. She enjoyed singing with fellow parishioners of Christ Chapel which was her religious home. Anna’s place of worship was of great importance to her and sustained her. Anna is survived by her husband, Mikhail; her children and their loved ones, Dimitri and Agafia Gergi, Fedor and Paraskovia Gergi, Yelena and Fedor Aluna, Vasiliy and Valentina Gergi, and Yekaterna and Yury Bulgaru; her 23 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Anna was a middle child, and two of her siblings preceded her. She also leaves her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and her church congregation family who were very important to her. She was predeceased by in-laws of her husband’s family. Visitation and Funeral Service will be held Friday evening between the hours of 5:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Final Prayers of the Departed will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery Chapel.
