Angelo R. Castelli

Mr. Angelo R. Castelli, age 92, of Utica, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center with his loving family by his side. Born in Utica on July 12, 1917, Angelo was the son of the late Michael and Almerinda (DeVito) Castelli. He was raised and educated locally. On April 6, 1940 he married the former Anna M. Sardina with whom he shared his life for 69 loving years. At one time, Angelo held positions with the Dunlop Company and the New York Central Railroad. He also worked at the General Electric plant on Broad Street, the position from which he retired. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed vegetable gardening, hunting, and fishing. He was a patron of the former East Side Senior Center, the West Side Senior Center, and the North Utica Community Center. Angelo was a spiritual man, devoted to his Catholic religion; he loved to attend Mass at his parish of St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church. Angelo is survived by his wife, Anna; his daughters and son-in-law, Mindy and Fred Garner of Sun City, AZ, Dorothea C. Smothers of Homestead, FL, Paula A. Fontaine of Whitesboro, and Angela M. Durrigan of Utica. He cherished the memory of his son-in-law, Gary Fontaine, who passed away on June 18, 2009. He also leaves his grandchildren, Janet McCarter, Garrett and Suzanne Garner, Michael Garner, Becky Moran, Kristina Fiorini and Brian, Gary R. Fontaine, Jr., Melissa Durrigan and Joe, and Gina and Adam Pinkos; and his 10 great-grandchildren. Survivors also include his twin sisters and brother-in-law, Rose Mozzetti of Utica, and Josephine and Enrico Cecilia of Whitesboro; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws, Anthony and Kate Sardina of New Hartford. He was predeceased by his infant son, Michael; his granddaughter, Lisa Ann; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Ann and Henry Paniccia, and Elizabeth and Mario Juliano; and his brother and sister-in-law, Anthony B. and Antoinette R. Costello. The family is grateful to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the St. Elizabeth Medical Center, with special thanks extended to Dr. Sudershan Dang for his care and compassion. Visitation will be held Friday (today) from 4:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Angelo’s funeral service will commence on Saturday morning at 9:00 from the funeral home and at 10:00 at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery.
