Angeline "Angie" (DeFazio) Mattia

Mrs. Angeline "Angie" (DeFazio) Mattia, age 88 of Utica, joined her beloved Anthony in Heaven on Sunday, December 23, 2012, as she passed away in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her devoted family. Angeline was the daughter of the late Joseph and Grace (Domanico) DeFazio. She attended T.R. Proctor High School. On August 12, 1944 she married Anthony P. “Tony” Mattia; they were an inseparable, magnetic couple during their 67 year marriage. They shared feelings of ardent love and devotion to each other that was beautiful and everlasting. They were best friends through their life journey. As the matriarch of her family, Angie’s focus was caring for her family and home, and tendingto her husband, children, and grandchildren with great enthusiasm. She was also graced with the gifts of cordiality and conversation, and warmly welcomed and embraced her family and friends. Her home was meticulous, well-organized, and open to all. She truly loved to teach her grandchildren the golden lessons of life. Angie was proud of her Italian heritage and so enjoyed her trips to Italy to visit her family. She was highly accomplished at cooking and sewing. She was eclectic in her musical preferences, however, she held a fondness for the music of Bobby Darin, and she loved to spend time watching her late night old time movies. She was a parishioner of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. Angie is survived by her daughter, Carla Alcantara of Utica,and the memory of her daughter, Susan Mattia Duffy, who preceded her in death. She also leaves her grandchildren, April Grounds, Holly Neveu, and Anthony and Darlene (Polanco) Alcantara; her great-grandchildren, Anthony Michael Vatalaro, and Mia Grounds; her step-great-grandchildren, Tracy Leone, and Joseph Leone; her sisters and brother-in-law, Marie Capra, and Jessie and Raymond Lechevel; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, in-laws Flora N. DeFazio of Utica who held a special closeness to Angie, and Theresa “Tessie” Mattia, both of Utica. She was predeceased by her brother, Carlo P. DeFazio; her sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Kelly Durse; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank Sr. andAssunta (Damanda) Mattia; and her in-laws, Dominic and Mary Mattia, Gerald “Jerry” and Jeannie Mattia, and Frank Mattia. The family is exceptionally grateful to Angie’s caregivers and the staff of Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., for the quality care and attention rendered to her. Visitation will be held Saturday from 10:00-12:00 noon at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Those wishing to express an act of kindness in lieu of flowers may make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association or St. Jude Children’s Hospital; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Angie’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Saturday at 12:00 noon from the funeral home upon conclusion of visitation and at 1:00 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. James Cesta. Entombment will take place in Calvary Mausoleum Cemetery.
