Mrs. Angela L. "Angie" Arrigo

Mrs. Angela L. “Angie” (Polizzi) Arrigo, age 90, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2014 in the comfort of her home with her loving family by her side. Born in Utica on April 17, 1924, Angela was the daughter of the late Louis and Congetta (Massina) Polizzi. She was raised and educated locally. On October 1, 1955 she married James Arrigo with whom she shared 27 years in a marriage of commitment and sacrifice so characteristic of their era, the Greatest Generation. They were a very compatible couple and their ventures were always beneficial to one another. Her beloved James passed away on March 17, 1983. Angie held a great pride and precision in her work at the Utica Knitting Mill, the Bendix Corporation, and the General Electric Company on Kent Street and also on Bleecker Street where she worked as an assembler and a line union steward, representing her fellow workers and advocating for their wellbeing. She was loved and blessed with many friendships throughout her life. At home, Angie was a loving, caring, dependable matriarch. She imparted her motherly wisdom and values to her children, teaching them to become confident and independent adults. Her home was her castle and she could fix anything! She spent her spring and summer days tending to her garden, especially her pole beans. There was always a meal on the table, and her memorable pusties and cassata were masterfully made and enjoyed by all. Sunday dinners and holidays were important to Angie as a joyous time of family members gathering together. Angie’s Christmas trees were extraordinary. She adorned them with love and attention to detail in a way that only she could do. She also enjoyed crocheting and many of her hand made treasures were passed on to her generations of loved ones. She practiced her Catholic faith as a communicant of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. Angie is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Sandra J. and George A. Salem of North Utica, and Debra A. Arrigo of Sauquoit; her grandchildren, Jamie Salem, George J. and Rebecca Salem; and Adam J. Arrigo; and her great-grandchildren, Brett, and Mikensie. She will also be missed by her sister, Frances Malagese of Utica; her brother, Michael Polizzi of FL; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, in-laws Theresa Arrigo, and Joseph Gaeta; her longtime friend and phone companion, Mickey Piacentino; and the family pet “Gigi”. She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Philip and Angela Polizzi, Joseph and Christine Polizzi, and Samuel and Shirley Polizzi; her sisters and brother-in-law, Ida Cully, and Mildred and Frank Olite; and her brother-in-law, Frank Malagese. The family is grateful to Dr. Naji El Khoury and Dr. Christopher Max for the kindness they shared over the years. Thanks also to the staff of Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. for their compassion and coordination in caring for Angie. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Expressions of sympathy in the form of donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. or the Stevens- Swan Humane Society; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Angela’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Friday morning at 10:00 from the funeral home and at 11:00 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. James Cesta. Committal services and Interment will take place graveside in St. Agnes Cemetery alongside her husband.
