Andrew "Drew" Mateo

Andrew “Drew” Mateo, age 25, went home to the Lord when his life was lost unexpectedly on Thursday, December 26, 2013. Born in Utica on August 13, 1988, Andrew was the son of Noel and Johanne (Ortiz) Mateo. He attended local schools and in the face of his struggles he honestly and diligently worked hard to overcome life’s challenges.. Drew was an industrious worker, motivated by his desire to provide for the support of his children. Drew was his mother’s heart and she loved his honest, up-front, yet humble and respectful ways. His family was everything to him, and he visited his grandmother, who he affectionately called ‘Mama’, every morning. His family admired his considerate demeanor, always wanting to please. He loved the tender care they gave him. His loved ones are always thankful for the all wonderful times, and the meaningful things they did together. Drew always wanted to help others… unconditionally. His brother Joel was his best friend and they shared regular rituals like the morning cup of coffee that was the bond that began the day. He also held a close connection to his twin sister, and when Drew hurt, she knew it! Naturally, his children were the greatest joy of his short life, and his heart was complete with them. He looked forward to Christmas celebrations with family and friends, and he particularly cherished this Christmas, not knowing that, tragically, it would be the last full day of his life on this earth. Drew will never be forgotten. With a grand passion for music, he recorded and wrote lyrics. He also followed the spectator sports of professional boxing and basketball, and he frequently enjoyed fresh-water fishing with his brother, Joel. Andrew is survived by his mother, Johanne Mateo; his father, Noel Mateo; maternal grandmother, Aida Centolella; his son, Andrew, Jr., age 7; his daughter, Jaritzalee, age 4; the mother of his children, Priscilla Feliciano; his sisters, Natashia Mateo, and his twin Andreana Mateo; his brother, Joel Mateo and his family; Marisol and ChiChi who he loved as sisters; his girlfriend and soul mate, Jessica Sullivan, who was a great salvation to Drew. Their relationship was rooted in love and was blossoming with Jessica’s mother, Ann Sullivan, and her family. He also leaves his paternal grandfather, Domingo Mateo; his great aunts, great uncles; aunts and uncles, Hilda and George Mateo, Ray and Debbie Ortiz, Jeff and Rose Ortiz, Suzanne Ortiz, Jason and Geraldine Ortiz, Maria Reyes, Evelyn Mateo, Jose and Candida Mateo, Jaime and Virginia Mateo, Ismaire Mateo, Norma Mateo, Rosalie Mateo, Jose and Maribel Mateo, Mickey and Laurie Colon, and Danny and Hilda Santiago; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Drew was blessed with friends from all walks of life, all ethnic groups, and all ages. He was loved by so many. Drew’s family felt that the many people who have paid homage to his life was an incredible honor, and they wish to thank all those who paid their respects during this difficult time. The family is most grateful to the UPD, especially Mike Curley, the physicians and staff at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, as well as the assistance of Lisa Rocci during his untimely passing. All of these professionals displayed much compassion and professional assistance. Visitation will be held Monday from 1:00-4:00 at the Redeemer Church, 931 Herkimer Rd, Utica. By family request, please omit floral offerings. Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the family allowing them to establish a scholarship fund for his children; envelopes will be available at the service or through the funeral home. Drew’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Monday afternoon at 4:00 at the church immediately upon conclusion of visitation with Pastor Mike Servello, Jr. officiating the ceremony. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave.
