Amelia "Amy" (Summo) Femia

Mrs. Amelia “Amy” (Summo) Femia, age 68, of New Hartford, passed into the hands of the Lord on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at the Albany Medical Center after a long, courageous battle with cancer. At the time of her passing, her loving family was by her side. Born in Utica on October 31, 1940, Amy was the daughter of the late Pasquale “Pat” and Nicoletta “Nicky” (Bumbalo) Summo. Raised and educated locally, she was a 1958 graduate of St. Francis DeSales High School. She began her working career at the General Electric Company as a secretary. On July 21, 1962 she married Rocco M. “Rock” Femia with whom she shared an adoring relationship of 47 years. A woman of kind words and modest demeanor, Amy kept others in her thoughts and was selfless in so many ways. She led by example, as a loving and devoted wife, mother, and Nonnie, and her children modeled themselves after the wonderful person she was. Her grandchildren filled her life with such joy, and each occasion spent with her family was an opportunity to “make another memory”. Her culinary talents were outstanding and having friends and loved ones gather around the table was one of her greatest pleasures. She was an avid bowler on various leagues, and she also played golf, especially with her husband, sister-in-law, Mary, and brother-in-law, Tony. She also enjoyed her bridge club with her dear friends. Rock and Amy were wonderful travel mates and shared such outstanding trips to Aruba and Florida. She was a parishioner of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. Amy is survived by her husband, Rock; her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia “Tricia” and John MacDonough of New Hartford; her sons and daughters-in-law, James and Mary Femia, and Rocco II and Sabrina Femia, all of Clinton; and her beloved grandchildren, Nicole and Johnny MacDonough; Jimmy, Anna, and Jillian Femia; and Vincenza, Rocco III, and Antonio Femia. Survivors also include her brother, Pasquale J. “Pat” Summo of Westmoreland and fiancée, Sandra Heilig, of Rome and her daughter Carlie; her mother-in-law, Marianna “Anna” (Trunfio) Femia; her in-laws, Mary and Anthony Chiffy of New Hartford, and Judith and Dominick Totino of Lindenhurst, LI; her nieces and nephews, Frank, Joann, Debbie, James, and their families; MaryAnn, Eve, Rose, Tony, Joe, and Vinny Chiffy and their families; her great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and several aunts, including Lucy Poccia and her daughter, Marilyn Poccia. Amy was also blessed with the love and respect of the Femia, Gerace, Leone, and Trunfio families. She also knew many wonderful friends throughout her life, especially her close friend, Diane Abraham. She was predeceased by her sister-in-law, Lauri Ann; her nephew, Pasquale J. “Pat” Summo, Jr., and her in-laws, Vincenzo “Jim” and Rose (Gerace) Femia. The family is grateful to all the outstanding people who were an inspiration and source of comfort to Amy and her family, including Dr. Atul Butala, the entire staff of the Faxton Regional Cancer Center, and Barb Acquaviva of Lincare. In keeping with Amy’s wishes, there will be no public visitation. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral service and Celebration of Life which will commence on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of Mass.
