Mr. Philip J. "Phil" McConkey

UTICA – Mr. Philip J. “Phil” McConkey, age 52, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 13, 2022. Born on August 15, 1970 to Francine (McConkey) Alam and the late Brian Charles Alam, Sr., Phil was raised and educated in Utica. He later continued his education in Long Island. In the early years of his career, he held a position on casino boats in Florida. Afterward, he worked at the Indium Corporation and later at FedEx as a stocker. Phil will mostly be remembered for his loving and caring heart. Never failing to put his family first, he was a loving and faithful son. He possessed a great energy and outgoing spirit, finding fun in everything he did. Never content with the ordinary, he marched to the beat of his own drum, and rose to every challenge with a smile on his face. He took great pride in doing things most people his age wouldn’t dare to do, but only marvel at. He spent much of his spare time fishing, and made many happy memories doing so with his dad. He also knew his way around the kitchen, and developed a reputation for many a delicious dish. Despite living with mostly Yankee fans, he was a devoted Red Sox fan and cheered them on with all his might! Phil loved the Lord, and attended church at Historic Old St. John’s. Phil is survived by his loving mother, Francine; and during his life he cherished the memory of his brother, Brian Charles Alam, Jr., who passed away on May 5, 1992. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles, Anthony McConkey and Claire Dillard, Bernard and Amy McConkey, Carol Rupley, Tina McConkey, Mary Angela Cunningham, Kathleen McConkey, and Nick McConkey. He will also be missed by a host of nieces and nephews, especially Michelle Gulla and Michael Peterson, and Debbie and Ray Jadhon. His memory will be cherished by many special friends including Terry, Will, Kevin, Phil, Frank, Ray, Andre, Tommy, Kenny, Anthony, Eddie, Dee and a host of others. He was preceded by his paternal grandparents, Joseph F. “Hottie” Sr. and Martha (Campanaro) Alam. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the doctors and nurses at MVHS at St. Elizabeth Medical Center for their care and compassion. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Philip’s Memorial Mass of Christian Burial which will commence on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Historic Old St. John’s Church, 240 Bleecker St., Utica. There will be an opportunity to greet the family at the conclusion of Mass.
